My wife is wearing the red life jacket. Samantha was floating the Matanuska River with some friends, when I landed to say, “hi”. As they floated away I snapped this shot.
The raft belongs to Mat-su Expeditions and River Guides. We were recently brainstorming with MERG and thought it would be fun to work together on an expedition that would include a fly-in, a hike, and a float out. We have an excellent location that would make an awesome trip. The super cubs would transport clients into the mountains with an experienced guide who would lead them on a multi day hike ending at a gorgeous glacial fed river, and a waiting raft. The last couple days would be spent floating and fishing your way back to Talkeetna. The possibilities on a trip like this get me all excited because of the stretch of wilderness that would be covered. The beauty, variety, and experience would go a long ways toward fulfilling many items on a bucket list.
My wife Samantha runs the hiking business Alaska Wilderness Trails and I encourage you to visit the website. We run the hiking business out of Sheep Mountain as well as the flying because they go hand-in-hand. I do the flying, and she does the hiking/coordinating. Her Grandpa homesteaded this area in the 40’s, and the Meekins have been living here ever since. Alaska Wilderness Trails was actually started by Samantha’s grandpa in the 1950’s. We recently re-initiated it because of the vast opportunities for wilderness lovers to experience untouched alpine. Alaska Wilderness Trails can coordinate large group trips for multiple weeks, or simple day hikes from the road system. We even offer an all-inclusive option starting at the Anchorage International Airport, including luxury accommodations at the Majestic Valley Lodge just 100 yards from our hangar. If you are itchin’ for an authentic Alaskan experience … you better call us. (907) 355-6008
