When Mike and I both land on the same short strip, with the intention of taking off fully loaded, we get rather cozy with our parking jobs. This strip is at 5500′ and it’s only 450′ long. I will take off with a hunter and 70 lbs of gear which is totally comfortable in a Super Cub. It is totally comfortable as long as I use the entire strip. Even thought I know the cub will operate off of less distance, why cut myself short if it’s available. It’s the unexpected surprise that drives the pucker factor off the fun meter in this game. What if I picked up a tail wind on takeoff, what if I lost a magneto, what if the passenger accidentally stepped on a rudder pedal and we ended up in the brush, sometimes it’s the last 15 feet of runway you need the most, and I am very reluctant to give it up.
