This little glacier is approximately 1 mile across. It’s the Matanuska Glacier and it’s only 5 minutes from my house. Look at it on a map and you will see just how small the Matanuska is in comparison to the big glaciers. The black line running down the center of the ice is the Middle Moraine and was cause by a fork in the glacier. The moraine begins at the base of the mountain that splits the left fork from the right fork. As the glacier passes by the mountain large debris slides, and boulders roll onto the ice and are carried downhill by the constantly moving glacier. Glaciers are amazingly dynamic. When walking on the surface of the ice it is normal to hear groaning and cracking as pressure is released and the ice shifts. I wish I could cram everybody in the plane, and show you all my front and back yard.
