Photo of the Day — Moving Off Our Mountain As The 2010 Season Concludes

The wind was blowing 70 mph in town and it was dumping snow up at our house.  The storm knocked our power out so I could not do my regular post on Friday.  When we woke up in the morning the ground was white with snow and it was 20 degrees.  These conditions are generally indicators that it’s time to move off the mountain.  We packed up “The Little House On The Strip” and crammed it all into the Ford and the Cub and then tucked our tail between our legs and headed for lower ground.  So, Blue Ice Aviation, and Meekin’s Air Service, are largely done with our flying season.  We are incredibly thankful for the safety of the season and the work that we were able to get done considering the adverse weather that prevailed this summer.
We are now down in our “other” little cabin on an airstrip in Wasilla where we are building our house.  We still have some goat hunters and other odds and ends flying that will inevitably come along.  But, for the most part, my 100+ hours per month will be cut by at least a two-thirds as colder temperatures, shorter days, and stronger winds ensue.  The time between yellow leaves and a white landscape is relatively pointless to be in Alaska, so Hawaii might just call our name.  It’s amazing to think that another flying season has come and gone just like that.
(We move back and forth off the mountain every year and I mentioned this when we moved north in early May right here.)
