This was a nice little spot we found today and used for the first time. It looked intimidating at first glance, but was actually pretty smooth and long. Fresh snow had fallen on the glacier in recent days leaving a crunchy surface. It was steep enough to keep you on your toes during touch down but it was nice and flat where we turned around. I really dislike turning the cub around on steep surfaces, it always feels like it’s going to tip over and land on the strobe light, which is expensive. Taking off downhill on extremely steep glaciers is scarier than landing on them. Directional control is marginal on ice because braking is nil and rudder effectiveness is diminished in the ever present tail wind. Not to mention that once you start down hill there is no turning back or slowing down, and if the pig gets going a little crooked on you there are going to be major problems.
The Super Cub in this image is high and left of center. It was a nice little spot.
