Photo of the Day — Toy Plane on the Rocks

My friend Carrie took this photo while I was approaching to land on the glacier.  Carrie is the one that took the new photos for the Blue Ice Aviation hoodies, hats, and T’s on the website.  This is a fun spot to land because I approach through a canyon in-between vertical ice on the right and vertical rock on the left.  At the closest point my wing is only about 10 feet from the rocks face.  A 90 degree turn is made away from the rocks and straight at the glacier which is climbing steeply away.  I aim to touch down on a section of smooth ice that is at a nearly 30 degree slope.  It’s so steep that I can’t out climb the ice, and full-power will not drag me to the top if I land too low.  I aim to set down 200′ below where the ice crests so that a combination of momentum and power will bring me to a flat stopping point.  It is really difficult to flare a steep landing to an exact touchdown point because there are so many factors at play in the last 3 seconds.  I prefer to get below my touch down point and fly up hill until I chop the power and land, but in this case it’s not an option because of the nature of the approach.  The take off is almost as fun as the landing.  As I power up and crest over the hill, heading steeply down the ice, it feels just like a roller coaster, and the passenger in the back often screams….but they love it.
