Photo of the Day — The North Face

Look at the contrast between the left and right sides of the glacier. It’s obvious which side receives more sun. The left is lush and green while the right is struggling to keep up. It’s neat to watch this progression through the seasons. I was flying North a couple weeks ago looking at the South sides of all the hills and they were basically bare dirt. A skiff of snow had fallen and stuck to the North sides of all the hills due to the lack of sun. The South sides were melted free of snow and a perfect line between black and white was drawn down each ridge. Looking to the North the ground was brown, but looking South it was purely winter.

This photo was taken on June 30th and you can see there is still snow struggling to survive at all elevation. The peak of our summer (elevations above 4500′) is from July 5th to August 5th. The flowers are at their finest around mid-July, and the weather is generally, relatively, for the most part, sometimes, sort of, OK.
