Photo of the Day — Life in the Cockpit

I was out flying solo on a survey for Fish and Game.  I took the photo with my right hand while flying with my left.  It’s interesting to me how easily the brain adapts to new tasks.  I realize it only takes a few seconds to take a picture, but I’ve flown for hours with my left hand, in order to operate equipment with my right.  Flying through the air does not exactly require fine motor skills, but landing a plane can take some real precision.  The cub is flown with the right hand and the throttle is operated with the left hand.  In the Cessna 185 the hands do exactly opposite tasks, yet there is no re-learning that cognitively takes place.  I guess it’s no different than driving a car, I don’t really care which hand I steer with, I just find it interesting.
I like this picture because it communicates well life in the cockpit.  You can see I have a very simple dash.  I only have the basic flight instruments, two GPS’s, and an ipod.  The camera hanging above my head is my old setup for getting POV footage.
