Photo of the Day — One Big Chunk of Ice

This is the Tazlina glacier which is only 20 minutes from our house at Sheep Mt. It is a massive glacier pouring out of the Chugach Mts. It is a beautiful area but is known for its extreme windiness. 40 knots is a mere trickle of air, and each season we are “blessed” with hurricane force winds on a couple of occasions. The air in the mountains becomes so turbulent in times like these that it is a challenge to turn a super cub around and head home. The problem is that every time a wing is lifted to make a turn the gusts of wind threaten to flip the Super Cub upside down. Much of the fun is lost once I start sucking down the seatbelt and powering back to take a beating. We have a general rule that says no ops when winds exceed 20 knots in Gulkana, it just ain’t worth it.
