Photo of the Day — Turnagain Arm on Friday

Cook Inlet is a 180 mile body of water that splits into Knik Arm and Turnagain Arm. Anchorage sits at the “Y” between the two. The Seward Highway runs along North side of Turnagain Arm. The small ski town of Girdwood is located just off the Seward Highway on Turnagain Arm as well as the turnoffs to Portage, Whittier, Hope and several other alaskan attractions.

Alaska has extreme tides, and the currents in Turnagain arm are incredibly powerful. Turnagain arm is known for it’s bore tide. It takes a nearly 30 foot tidal difference (between high and low) in-order to create the bore. The bore tide reaches about 6-10 feet high and travels at more than 10 miles per hour. I have seen these on a number of occasions and they are always impressive. There is no bore tide pictured above, but I still think it’s a nice shot of Turnagain arm.
