I took this picture on a short flight yesterday. After installing the new alternator (as described yesterday) I flew the Cub to make sure that the electrical system was charging normally. The weather left a little to be desired as visibility was reported to be only 4 miles. I like this picture because it’s one of my few images that represents accurate size and dimension from the air. The road and the cars on the road help the brain to determine scale. This is in comparison to my usual pictures which show only rocks, glaciers, hills and other geographic formations which are impossible to determine accurate size.
I think the weather report for this area was relatively accurate regarding the 4 mile visibility report. Without getting into the legal nitty gritty details of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), a very general “rule of thumb” for commercial operators is 2 miles visibility. I don’t know about you, but the weather in this picture does not look all that great and yet it is twice the legal limit. Just an interesting observation.
