I’m irritated because I forgot my camera in the airplane when I was done flying today so I can’t upload my fresh photos. But I found this one and I think it’s pretty cool too.
When I saw this photo it made my heart sink because of the dingy weather hanging over the ice. To most folks this is just a nice photo of a glacier, but I see turbulence, rain, and poor visibility. This photo was taken on the North side of the range looking South and this is a classic example of our weather when a low pressure is dominating Prince William Sound. You may be interested to know that this is the glacier that 1000’s of prospectors traveled in the gold rush of 1898-99. After reaching this point many of the prospectors built boats and the lucky ones floated to Klutina Lake. Many boats swamped on the short float down to the lake washing away dreams and entire life-savings. I have spent some time looking around in this area for artifacts but little remains. History is a relatively short thing for Alaska. An old house in these parts is one that was built in the 1970’s. An area like this, with recorded of history of 100+ years is oddity and I enjoy learning about it.
