There was a gusty 20 mph wind blowing down glacier and it was steep enough that an uphill takeoff was uncertain at best. I almost always opt for the downhill takeoff with a tailwind rather than risk the up-hill, up-wind option. Up-hill take-offs are a precise maneuver and especially risky in gusty winds. Whenever a stiff tailwind exists it’s best to take multiple light loads, rather than one heavy one that ends in a pile of bent metal.
