After a month of eating powdered spaghetti, grits, and beef jerky just imagine how exciting a gallon of ice cream would be. Mike started the tradition of delivering ice cream to each NOLS course decades ago. It’s a lot of fun to watch the students nearly cry when they see what’s inside the small cooler I dig out of the Cub. At this point in their journey I think the ice cream is more exciting to them than if I offered each student a million dollars, because out here the sweet allure of ice cream is WAY more exciting than green paper.
If I had not mentioned it before, this photo shows NOLS students hovering around a cardboard container of ice cream. This photo was taken in the spectacular hiking territory of the Talkeetna Mountains.
