I was hauling groceries and gear for a wilderness course. Unless the weather is really marginal I will hang out and let them organize the supplies, so I can back-haul the garbage and excess food. Sometimes while I am waiting, I will go on a hike and get some exercise for myself. When I took this picture they had hiked about 40 miles off the road system and were only half-way through their NOLS course. Most of these courses will spend an entire month in the field without seeing another soul besides Mike or I. To complete a course like this is a major accomplishment, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. At elevations above 3000′ you can experience anything from 90 degrees to measurable snowfall. Snow is uncommon in June and July, but very possible. Wildlife such as Caribou, Sheep, and Bear roam around these parts and are always fun to see. My wife’s company, BackPackAK.com, guides much shorter, personal, custom ecotourism trips in these same hills. If you want to experience Alaska’s Wilderness but don’t want to spend a month doing it, check out our website.
