Photos of the Day — Fall Weather in Alaska

I spent the bulk of the day waiting on weather. I think this mornings fog was spread from the Ukraine to Memphis, and we were in the middle of it. When I got out of bed I could barely see across the driveway because the fog was so thick. I was excited to see the bad weather because it meant I had time to go to church and hang out with family and friends. I did not get airborne until nearly 2 o’clock this afternoon, and even that proved to be a bit early. I got as far as the Little Willow and had to turn around again because of low lying fog, poor visibility, and limited gas. I landed at a friends house near Long Lake and had a great time visiting and catching up.

I eventually got the hunter moved out of the field late this afternoon, and then I straight-lined it for my house on the mountain. I got home at about 8pm and left again immediately to pick up a prospector in the Talkeetna Mountains. I landed up at 5600′ MSL in the pouring rain and 36 degrees. I struggled to get on the ground because of the rain on the windscreen and it took me a half a dozen passes to sort out the good from the bad. The conditions were poor enough that I was extra thankful I had a warm bed waiting for me back at the house. We departed the mountain top and I got home in time to tuck in the baby.

The photos above show some of todays weather, and the prospector I picked up this evening.
