I have shown photos of iceberg lake in the past but I think it’s worth re-visiting. This is an amazing spot to walk around in. (To see the full explanation including a video click here) To actually walk amongst the icebergs is quite a hike because the nearest landing sight is nearly 5 miles away on a glacier. I have made the trip several times, and I am always amazed at the size of of the ice chunks. Most of them are as big as a pickup truck, but there are hundreds of house sized pieces as well. It’s spooky to walk near them on a warm day because the remnants of falling pieces lay scattered across the lake bottom, and the sound of falling ice thunders at regular intervals. I once found a full curl head set from a Dall Sheep in the bottom of this lake. I would guess that it was killed in an avalanche and was carried onto the lake shore down one of the many ravines. When you come to Alaska make sure I show you this area because it’s awesome.
