backcountry skiing

I love skiing. I have a passion for it. It’s one of my favorite ways to implement the many uses of a Super Cub.

Here is the bummer … primo spring ski-season is right in the middle of primo Fish and Game work. Both types of flying require ultimate flexibility in order to utilize small weather windows. Because of this, I have become increasingly difficult to schedule generic ski trips with.

I have good news and I have bad news. The bad news is, if you are on a tight budget it is going to be really difficult to get a lift. I know skiers understandably want sunshine … I can’t promise sunshine, but the good new is, the Blue Ice Aviation Glacier Hut has world class skiing, in-floor heat, a sauna and a soft bed … sadly, these luxuries come with a price. But un-sadly, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

If you want to see what the skiing can be like in March at the hut check out this little video my buddy made.

drop-off backpacking

The mountains surrounding our base of operation are second to none. Tens of thousands of square miles of wilderness surround our airstrip. Within 30 minutes of our airstrip are three massive glaciers and dozens of smaller ones. The Chugach is a maze of vertical rock and ice while the Talkeetnas are a backpackers high alpine paradise. We have numerous drop-off locations that offer a myriad of opportunities. Day hike from a central base camp, or complete a mountain traverse.

There are no trails, this is pure, high alpine, brushless wilderness, and anybody with some map reading skills and an adventurous spirit can have a trip of a life-time!! We are excellent at listening to your desires, skills, and limitations, and pointing you in the right direction.

We are a small operation so everything is custom, there is no cookie-cutter trip we try to shove down your throat. There is no need to be a mountain man, just a soul looking for an adventure. I highly recommend planning your trip between June 15 and September 15.

flight seeing

I don’t really know what to say about this. I feel like a schmuck trying to sell it because words can’t describe the surrounding landscape.

I’ve thought about this for quite a while and decided I will not disgrace the area with flowery words, you are just going to have to trust me on this one … it’s worth the price. Check out the blog or instagram to see some photo evidence.

For flight seers we are on the “old school bush schedule”. Which means it’s best to schedule a maximum of 2 days in advance, and then show up with a flexible spirit, because you might end up down at the lodge eating pie while you wait for us.
