At the Glacier hut

GENERAl

No, the Glacier Hut has a glacier view but is built on a solid foundation of rock. To walk on the glacier, you must navigate a steep moraine and proceed carefully.

We can’t. This is a real wilderness experience with inherent risks such as bears, falling, and remoteness. While unnecessary risks have been minimized, personal responsibility is key. If you need a completely risk-free experience, this may not be the right adventure for you.

Starlink internet is provided. You can text or call via WiFi. This is our primary method of communicating with you during your stay.

There is no traditional cell service.

The hut sleeps 4 guests comfortably, but can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests. There are four twin beds: two twins downstairs and two twins in the loft. Both the downstairs and loft layout can be converted to king beds. Two benches in the sauna can sleep one person each, and two extra foam mattresses are available for floor sleeping.

From the hut you can hike, backcountry ski (in the winter), enjoy photography and the midnight sun, watch for wildlife, cook, read, sauna, etc.

Less than a half mile. See this video for reference.

The airstrip has a lot of mosquitos from late June to late July. At the hut there are mosquitos but they are manageable. There is bug dope, and mosquito killers on-site.

It is common to see black bears on the hillsides around the hut. They have not been a problem, but bear repellant (spray or bullets) is recommended. I will provide bear spray on arrival at the Hut airstrip.

 No pets allowed.

Yes. You are responsible for bringing all your own food. We recommend packing food in a backpack (or similar) for easy transportation from the airstrip to the hut. Food can be hauled in a cooler if necessary, but it is more challenging.

Yes. The hut has 120-volt power supplied by an automated system with a generator, inverter, supercapacitor, and solar.

Yes, there is a full kitchen with a small refrigerator, four-burner stove, oven, sink, counter space, and kitchen table.

Not if there are 4 or less guests. If there are more than 4 guests plan on bringing sleeping bags.

I recommend packing light and being able to put all your belongings into something you can carry on your back. Food can be hauled up the hill in a cooler. It’s not easy, but I’ve done it lots of times.

I can arrange a helicopter drop off and pick up that will deliver you within 200′ of the hut. This will cost extra.

Yes, there is running water. However, there is no flush toilet. The outhouse is located 65 feet from the hut. A honey-bucket is available in the hut shower for nighttime use (pee only).

Yes.

All drinking water is flown in by aircraft. Tap water comes from snow, ice, and rain collection, with a visible holding tank to monitor supply.

A propane heater is wall-mounted. A small wood stove is also available for experienced users.

The sauna is heated with a wood stove.

All firewood is flown in, making it a limited luxury. Guests receive a reasonable ration of wood for their stay.

Yes, a 2 night minimum is required. If you want only 1 night, the cost will be the same as a 2 night stay.

Transportation

No. Our home base airstrip during summer months is 100 miles NE of Anchorage on the Glenn Hwy. You will need to have your own wheels to drive to our airstrip.

Guests typically fly in a Cessna 185, though a helicopter may be used depending on weather and scheduling.

No. Lodging is paid once your reservation has been confirmed; flights are paid upon arrival at the hangar (cash or check only).

Yes. Each person is limited to 50 lbs. The 50 lb limit DOES NOT include food, skis, etc. Please let me know if a member of your party weighs more than 240lbs. This helps for flight planning. Remember everything must be carried from the airstrip to the hut, so lighter is better. No roller suitcases. I can loan you a backpack if you communicate needs before your arrival.

$300 per person round trip (minimum of two people). Helicopter flights cost $400 per person round trip (minimum of two people).

Guests normally fly two at a time when flying in the Cessna 185 (plane). If guests opt to take a helicopter, 4 are able to fly together. We make multiple trips as needed.

It’s about 15 minutes to fly from the air strip to the hut.

Please meet us at Meekin’s Air Service at 9:45AM on the first day of your stay. We’ll review info, collect flight fees, and intend to be in the air by 10AM.

Meekin’s Air Service                                                                                          Glenn Hwy at mile 115                                                                                       (16288 W. Glenn Hwy, Sutton AK, 99674)

A helicopter drop-off can be arranged, landing within 200 feet of the hut for an additional cost.

Rarely, but it is possible. Morning fog usually burns off by 11AM. Clouds or wind may occasionally delay flights, but extra nights will not be charged if you are flying with me.

If weather delays us from flying out to the hut, guests are responsible for finding alternate lodging options. Lodging fees are covered by the guest; however, you will not be charged for the unused night at the Glacier Hut.

If you are flying with our flight services (Blue Ice Aviation or helicopter services) and weather prevents you from leaving the hut on your scheduled departure day, extra nights will not be charged.

If you are a local pilot, flying in with a friend, or using services other than Blue Ice Aviation or our helicopter partner, and weather prevents you from leaving the hut on your scheduled departure day, you will be charged for any additional nights at a rate of $500 per night. (That said, I am not an unreasonable person. I am protecting myself from guests using weather excuses to obtain extra nights.)

bookings and canceLlations

More than 90 days in advance: $150 cancellation fee, with the rest refunded.

Less than 90 days in advance: No refund. Trip insurance is recommended.

Possibly. Availability permitting, additional nights may be booked. Additional nights are available at $500 per night.

By booking the hut, you automatically reserve a flight with Blue Ice Aviation Inc. unless otherwise specified.

Yes. Local pilots receive a $300 discount.

Yes. Beyond four guests, an additional $125 per person per night is required to help maintain the property.

We aim to be punctual, but flexibility is required due to Alaska’s dynamic conditions. Be prepared to fly at your given time, and we will communicate any changes.

Communicate that request when you book the Glacier Hut. Payment will still be made to Blue Ice Aviation but you will fly with Sheep Mountain Air. The cost is $400 per person round trip.

You will need to make other arrangements for that night at your own cost. You will obviously not be charged by me for the hut, unless you are flying in with somebody else. I recommend Sheep Mountain Lodge just 1 mile down the road. Additionally the schedule will allow you to push your reservation back one night without interfering with other stays.

You will not be charged for the additional night, unless you are flying with somebody else. I do strongly recommend a 48 hour buffer on the back end of your stay to prevent you from missing any flights, bookings, etc.

Reserve your dates first. If bringing more than four people, note it in the comments, and we’ll finalize later. Visiting guests staying overnight must notify Blue Ice Aviation and pay applicable fees accordingly.
