This is the Kashwitna drainage in the Talkeetna Mountains. I just love the perspective this picture offers. In fact, I have started a folder of images entitled “the ground”. I know that is not exactly a riveting designator, but anytime there is no horizon available it really changes the “feel” of the picture. I don’t know why this is, but it’s something I’ve noticed while looking at my images. I hope to turn my, “the ground”, folder into a chapter in a photo book I will publish someday. I had hoped to publish my photo book this Spring, but after much research I have decided that it is too expensive for me to take-on at this time. So, I will continue to compile a library of scenic aviation images until the time that I can afford to publish.

After spending the weekend with the “web-dudes”, we have decided on some changes that I am really excited about. We hope to release the new version of BlueIceAviation.com sometime next week, but there are many obstacles to schlep through first.

I am home now after a long drive from Juneau, I apologize for the lack of photos lately … life is hard without internet. :o)

I am in the SeaTac airport right now. I’m sitting on the carpeted floor leaning up against one of those big pillars stealing power from the city of Seattle so my computer battery has enough juice to make it to Ketchikan and then Juneau. I am cruising through my photos as my butt goes numb but, when I saw this one I thought it was perfect. This photo was taken almost directly overtop of Blue Ice Aviation’s Summer home base. I’m South bound with the Lions Head (rock monolith), out in front. This is the heading that would take me directly to Homer if I climbed high enough to clear the mountains on the horizon. You can see the Glenn Hwy on the right hand side at the base of the hill and the Matanuska glacier is just out of view behind the Lions Head. It’s funny to think that It would take me nearly as long to reach Homer from this photos vantage point in my cub, as it will take me to fly from here to homer on Alaska Airlines. That is not a perfect example but it’s pretty doggone close. The Cub is embarrassingly slow.

Well, my plane is boarding …

I woke up Friday morning and said, “Hey Samantha, should we go to Juneau today?” and she said, “sure”. We had a bundle of air miles on Alaska Airlines so we got tickets for the afternoon and jumped on the plane. We had been waiting for a hole in our schedule to make this trip, and time was getting short because Samantha is 34 weeks along. Of course the weather was terrible all through out Alaska this weekend so we were delayed getting out of Anchorage. We were on the milk-run which means 1.5 hour flight turns into a 4 hour flight. We landed in Cordova and Yakutat before reaching Juneau. The weather was horrible at all the destinations, and when we landed in Juneau it was 25 knots gusts 40 and rain/snowing sideways … beautiful. I told my Dad we were coming, but we surprised my Mom. Dad came up with some silly excuse to get a cup of coffee at the airport at 8 pm and Mom went for it. She was dumb-struck when we walked up to the car, and piled in as Dad drove by the doors in front of baggage claim.

We had a great time hanging out with Mom and Dad, and seeing the sights in Juneau. My Dad is the State Representative for the City of Wasilla. He is not a politician, he has been a working-stiff like the rest of us his whole life, and has only held this position for a couple of years. He was appointed by Sara Palin to take the place of one of the legislators after the corruption scandal was uncovered in 2007. It’s good to have people like him down there because he knows that the heartbeat of America is small businesses like Blue Ice Aviation, Meekin’s Air Service, and millions of others. Dad owned a really small construction company when we were kids, and my brother and I were the two employees. My mom works as a receptionist in Senator Fred Dyson’s office, and she has been there ever since I graduated high school. Before that, her full time job was raising my sister, my brother, and I, and we did a pretty good job of keeping her busy. It’s great to see them at work in the capital building, and I can’t help but smile because they are such a down-to-earth, honest, joyful pair … and the system desperately needs that right now. My parents are amazing, I love them.
