I took these photos while flying over the Chugach mountains earlier this year. It has been a slow start to the flying season because South Central Alaska has very little snow cover. I hope America is enjoying all our snow, because Alaska is getting a little bummed right now. We went through a long period of unusually warm temperatures in January. February has been windy, but I’m not complaining, It’ll eventually straighten itself out, and then we will get to work! I’m doing lots of maintenance on the planes and enjoying a semi-normal life this winter. I did not do a good job of selling calendars this year because I was so distracted with moving into the house and then traveling, so I ended up with 20 extras. I would love to get rid of them so I put them up on a 2 for one deal. Enjoy!

I did not know what cyber monday was until 2012, but now I am a sucker like all the rest. So I put together some combos in hopes of saving you a few bucks on both the product and the shipping. You all know I love Alaska … but our shipping prices are the pits … Sorry about that.

My wonderful big sister took some new photos of all my merchandise this year, and I’ve posted them below. We are less than a week out from the new year, and I’ve got to dump about 16 calendars, so I have a buy 1 get 1 free sale while supplies last. I’ve gotten lots of feed back and it seems that folks are really happen with the product. This whole inventory thing is a dynamic beast, and as much as I love these calendars I don’t need 16 of them. Photo of the Day — Big Glaciers, Cold Weather, and Christmas Orders

It is difficult to determine depth in this photo but I am about 2000′ off the ground. Each crevasse is large enough to swallow a Buick or ten. It’s humbling to realize the scale of these glaciers. This is the Tazlina Glacier and it’s approximately 2 miles wide and 20 miles long. She is a real beauty. The weather near the Tazlina is extreme, regularly blowing more than 50 mph with temperatures reaching to -40 in the winter. Speaking of cold and wind, I hope you are all staying warmer than I am during this Christmas season. It is currently 11 degrees and blowing more than 50 mph. I just went up on the roof of the hangar to re-attach some DuPont roof-liner and … it was scary.

I believe everything is in stock except XL t-shirts and XXL hoodies, but more are on the way.
My wonderful mother is my shipping department during the Christmas season and she always does an awesome job. With on-line orders increasing each year it has been an interesting beast to tackle. Shipping out of Alaska is expensive, we do our best on the price and often end up eating some of the expense our selves, but … what should we expect living this far north :o)

Right in the middle of the picture, below all the ice falls and crevasses, is a little black smudge. That little black smudge is the camp of mountaineers that we were hauling into the 7000′ foot elevation on one of Alaska’s huge glaciers at the foot of The Chugach’s tallest peak. I was in our Summer wheel ski plane, “lulu”, belonging to a good friend of ours. We operate three Super Cubs, and Two Cessna 185’s. It’s really interesting to fly all the different planes because each one is set up differently, and is it’s own beast.

I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving, I know we did here in Alaska. Because it is Black Friday and you are out spending money anyway …. maybe you should, ummm, perhaps, buy one of these Blue Ice Aviation Calendars for that airplane/wilderness lover in your life :o) Enjoy the day, I’m going to spend mine insulating the remainder of the walls in my house with fiberglass, it’s only 9 AM, and I am already itchy.

I thought it would be neat to have Ali model the new Blue Ice Aviation hats for the website. As it turns out, Ali did not think it was a neat idea because all she wanted to do was play in the snow. I interupted her play time and she was going to let me hear about it. She recovered quickly and Samantha soon had Ali “showing us her teeth”.
